The first recorded race meeting at this location was a four-mile handicap for three-year-old colts on 4 May 1744; this event featured two heats and a final over 7 furlongs.
In 1855–56 it hosted its first official 18 furlong (1 mi) race called “The Oaks” which took place each year but did not become part of any official programme until 1910 due to its distance being considered too short.
